You put a patch on before bed and wake up to find it stuck to your pillowcase. It's the most common complaint about hydrocolloid patches, and it's usually fixable.
1. The skin wasn't fully dry
Hydrocolloid grips dry skin. Even a little water left from washing your face stops it sealing. Pat dry, then wait a minute.
2. Product underneath
Moisturiser, serum, oil or sunscreen under the patch acts like a release layer. Put the patch on first, then do the rest of your routine around it.
3. The patch is too small for the spot
If the patch only just covers the spot, there's no clean skin at the edge for it to grip. Go one size up, or cut a piece of hydrocolloid tape with a few millimetres of border all the way round.
4. Sharp corners
Corners are where lifting starts, especially against a pillow. If you're cutting tape, round the corners with scissors.
5. It's in a spot that moves
Chin, jawline and around the mouth move all night. A longer strip that follows the curve of the jaw holds better than a small circle.
A 20-second routine that works
- Wash, pat dry, wait a minute.
- Nothing on that spot.
- Patch or tape with a border of clean skin and rounded corners.
- Press and hold for 5–10 seconds so it warms and seals.
- In the morning, peel it off slowly. If it's gone white, it's done its job.
Hydrocolloid is for surface spots and whiteheads, not deep or cystic breakouts. For those, talk to a GP or dermatologist.
